The
ceramics program is designed to help students find their own personal
touch with the material of clay. Students have the opportunity to
explore both wheel and handbuilding techniques. Introductory and
intermediate courses are designed to develop technical and aesthetic
skills. Advanced level courses are highly individualized and are
designed to enable students to develop a cohesive body of work,
explore advanced technical skills and focus on areas of personal
identity within their work. Advanced students will participate in
the mixing of clay and glazes along with firing the gas, electric and wood
kilns. The ceramics program has a well-equipped and maintained studio.
Individual workspaces are provided for the upper-level student.
The ceramic facilities in Studio Angelico were completely upgraded in 2006. Classroom upgrades include a state-of-the-art ventilation system. Equipment upgrades are numerous: Bailey downdraft gas kiln, single chamber wood kiln, outdoor soda kiln, computerized 27" Bailey electric kiln, kiln room exhaust system, Brent slab roller, Bluebird pug mill and slip casting equipment.
The ceramics program also offers a fifth-year special student/visiting artist residency program for ceramic students needing an extra year to prepare for graduate studies. Every year numerous visiting artist workshops are held in the ceramics program. Recent visiting artists include Walter McConell (Alfred University), Denise Pellitier (Connecticut College), Mikey Walsh (LSU), Matthew Towers (Hartford School of Art) and Andrew Brayman (Kansas City, Missouri).
